Accounts Assistant

Bernard Kavanagh & Sons Ltd

Full job description

We are a busy coach operator running services across four depots and are looking for an Accounts Assistant to support the finance team in the day-to-day running of the finance function. The role is based at our Urlingford depot but will require regular travel to our Cork depot — typically two days per week — to support the finance activities on site. A full driving licence and access to own transport are essential, with mileage reimbursed.

This is a hands-on, varied role suited to someone with 1–3 years of accounts experience who is looking to broaden their skills across the full finance cycle in a fast-paced transport environment. It is also an opportunity to develop within a growing, established family business.

Key Responsibilities

Purchase Ledger: Processing supplier invoices across all four depots, matching to purchase orders and delivery dockets, reconciling supplier statements, preparing payment runs for approval, and resolving supplier queries.

Sales Ledger: Raising customer invoices for private hire, contract, and school transport work, issuing statements, and maintaining accurate customer records.

Credit Control: Monitoring aged debtors, following up overdue accounts by phone and email, and escalating issues to the finance team where required.

Bank & Reconciliations: Posting daily bank transactions, performing bank reconciliations across multiple accounts, and reconciling fuel card and credit card statements.

VAT & Revenue Returns: Assisting with the preparation of bi-monthly VAT returns, Diesel Rebate, and other Revenue submissions, ensuring records are kept in order for compliance.

Payroll Support: Assisting with the collation of weekly driver hours, processing timesheets, and supporting the payroll function as required.

Management Accounts Support: Assisting with month-end tasks including accruals, prepayments, journal postings, and preparation of supporting schedules for management accounts.

General: Filing, post handling, supporting year-end audit preparation, and providing ad hoc finance support to the wider finance team and depot managers.

Candidate Profile

Essential:

  • 1–3 years’ experience in an accounts assistant or similar finance role
  • Working knowledge of purchase ledger, sales ledger, and bank reconciliations
  • Strong Excel skills (formulas, pivot tables, lookups)
  • Experience with a recognised accounting package (e.g. Sage, Xero, SAP, Surf Accounts)
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
  • Good communication skills — comfortable dealing with suppliers, customers, and depot managers
  • Full clean driving licence and own transport (essential for travel to Cork)
  • Ability to work independently when at the Cork depot

Desirable:

  • Accounting Technician (ATI) qualified or working towards qualification
  • Experience in transport, logistics, or a multi-site operation
  • Exposure to payroll processing
  • Experience with Diesel Rebate and Revenue Online Service (ROS)

Pay: €16.50 per hour
